Drake Talks Collabs With Jay-Z & Mary J Blige
June 21st, 2009Is Drake the future of Hip-Hop?
June 21st, 2009
Hip-Hop’s new Savior.
Successful artists from Mary J. Blige to Jamie Foxx are crowning rapper/actor Aubrey “Drake” Graham as Hip-Hop’s new savior.
Foxx recently had this to say:
“Drake is the new movement, man. You gotta think about what this kid has done, man. To have records on a mixtape, and then the next thing you know he’s on top of the charts. And every time you mention him, people go crazy
While no one can dispute the fact that newcomer Drake is currently taking the music industry by storm, is it fair to call him the savior of Hip-Hop. A savior is someone who saves something, or prevents it from extinction or harm.
Critics of Hip-Hop have been saying that the art form is dead while others think the creativity is at it’s peak. While you would be hard pressed to find many who agree with the latter, what would be the credentials of someone who is saving Hip-Hop.
The criterion for being a Hip-Hop heavyweight changes based on who is doing the judging but one thing for sure is that in order to be great your lyrical skills and content must be superior. Sadly Drake’s content and wordplay, while witty is far from the level that he would be saving the game and forcing other rappers to step their game up. I never thought I would say this but you can find more lyrical superiority in listening to 1/4 of a Slaughterhouse track than either of Drake’s two mixtapes that can be downloaded at any local website near you.
What Drake is doing, and very well I might add is bringing fun back to Hip-Hop. He’s not afraid to rap about girls, cars and flossing —– and how broke flossing makes him at times. It’s too early for all this savior talk and it feels rushed. Record labels and music people are too anxious to usher in a new “savior” in order to build a buzz around that rapper so that sales can stop looking so dismal.
Is Drake 2009’s savior of Hip-Hop, probably not. Is he doing a good job finding himself a great fanbase while creating good music, yes he is and that is all an artist can ask for while aspiring to be the best.

Drake Talks Jay-Z & Lil Wayne; 2 Mill Bidding War
June 5th, 2009
He is arguably the most talked about up-and-coming artist since Kanye West and 50 Cent and he is focused on making the best music with the best people. “Everybody is looking for this one joint with me and Jay, so that needs to happen,” Drake says. [watch here]
Although Drake continues to build his rep, he says the one person he seeks advice from is Lil Wayne, the head of his Young Money crew. [watch here] “Wayne is another one that — rap-wise, verse-wise — was my favorite,” he said. “And to be under his wing, to be able to interact with him on a daily basis and talk to him and get information from him — I’m in a blessed position. I have the greatest mentors, the greatest teachers in the world. They all have gradually started to embrace me more and more, so it’s a great feeling.” [watch here]
In related news, Drake is rumored to be in the middle of big bidding war as he is currently not signed to a major label. Although its believed that Drake will probably sign with Universal due to their relationship with his Young Money crew, sources have told news outlets that three majors are in possibly “one of the biggest bidding wars ever.” It is rumored that an undisclosed company has offered Drake $2 million to join their ranks.

Drake Working On Rihanna’s New LP, Denies Romance Rumors
June 4th, 2009
The industry doesn’t just want guest verses from Drake, they want a piece of his pen game. A clip of an interview with that the hot-but-still-unsigned MC did recently in London was recently posted on DJ Semtex’s Web site. Drizzy was in the U.K. working with Rihanna on her new album.
“I’m actually writing for Rihanna right now,” he told DJ Semtex. The Toronto native went on to reveal what should already be obvious: Life is pretty good for him these days.
“I guess I’m living a dream,” he said about his success thus far. “I enjoy a challenge. I’ve never in my mind felt like, ‘Oh, I could probably write something crazy for Rihanna.’ That wasn’t my first thought. But being put up to the task, we’re coming up with some special stuff. It’s crazy, man. All I could do is smile. It’s nice.”
When Semtex asked if he and Rihanna had anything going on besides work, Drake once again played if off with light laughter.
“Out here? Yeah, it’s just work. Me and Rihanna are just me and Rihanna. We’re cool and she’s great, man. She’s a great person, definitely.”
“Whatever,” Drake continued with a chuckle when asked about the rumors that the two of them were spied kissing at a New York bowling alley. Late last month, the New York Post published an item in its gossip column claiming that Drake and Rihanna were spied kissing all night at Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge bowling alley. One of the paper’s spies was quoted as saying, “She was drinking whiskey and apple juice and making out with him all night. … They were really cute together.”
“We’re young, having fun and enjoying life. That’s all,” he said of the rumors.
In addition to being arguably the hottest unsigned artist out there right now, Drake played a high profile show in New York last week in front of an audience that featured heavyweights like Kanye West, Bun B, Talib Kweli, Ryan Leslie, Eminem tour DJ/producer Alchemist and executives from multiple record companies.
